The best upgrade for a slow laptop. Boot time drops from minutes to seconds. We supply, clone, install — usually same-day.
From R650If your laptop takes minutes to boot, programs are slow to open, and everything feels sluggish — you probably don't need a new laptop. You need an SSD. At Asetos Computers in Rosebank, we specialise in upgrading older laptops with solid-state drives (SSDs) and additional RAM. It's the single most impactful upgrade you can make to an ageing computer, and it typically costs a fraction of what a new laptop would.
An SSD upgrade transforms your boot time from 2–3 minutes to 15–20 seconds. Programs open instantly instead of bouncing in the taskbar. File transfers that took minutes happen in seconds. Combined with a RAM upgrade, your 5-year-old laptop will feel like a brand new machine.
We supply the SSD, clone your existing hard drive (so all your files, programs, settings, and Windows installation transfer exactly as-is), install the new SSD, and verify everything works perfectly. Your old hard drive can be placed in a USB enclosure that we provide so you have an instant external backup drive.
We work with both SATA SSDs (for older laptops with 2.5-inch drive bays) and NVMe M.2 SSDs (for newer machines with M.2 slots). We'll check your laptop's compatibility and recommend the right type and capacity.
| SSD Capacity | Price (incl. install + clone) |
|---|---|
| 250GB SSD | R900 – R1,200 |
| 500GB SSD | R1,200 – R1,800 |
| 1TB SSD | R1,800 – R2,800 |
| 2TB SSD | R3,000 – R4,500 |
Prices include the SSD, professional installation, full data clone from your old drive, and a USB enclosure for your old hard drive.
RAM (Random Access Memory) determines how many tasks your laptop can handle simultaneously. If you frequently run multiple browser tabs, Office applications, video calls, and other programs at the same time, insufficient RAM causes everything to slow down as Windows starts using the hard drive as virtual memory.
Most older laptops come with 4GB of RAM, which is barely enough for modern Windows. Upgrading to 8GB or 16GB makes a noticeable difference in multitasking performance. We check your laptop's maximum supported RAM and current configuration before recommending an upgrade.
| Upgrade | Price (incl. install) |
|---|---|
| 4GB → 8GB (add 4GB module) | R650 – R900 |
| 4GB → 16GB (replace with 2×8GB) | R1,200 – R1,800 |
| 8GB → 16GB (add 8GB module) | R800 – R1,200 |
| 8GB → 32GB (replace with 2×16GB) | R2,000 – R3,000 |
The best value upgrade is doing both SSD and RAM together. We offer a combo service where we upgrade your SSD and RAM in a single visit, with data cloning included. This typically takes 2–3 hours and you can wait at The Zone while we work. A typical combo (500GB SSD + 8GB RAM upgrade) runs between R1,800 and R2,500 all-in — compared to R8,000–R15,000 for a new laptop of equivalent performance.
Sometimes the best approach is a clean start. If your Windows installation is bloated with years of software installs, registry entries, and accumulated junk, a fresh Windows installation on your new SSD will give you the best possible performance. We back up your personal files, install a clean copy of Windows, install your essential drivers, and transfer your documents, photos, and other personal data. This is an optional add-on to any SSD upgrade.
Most laptops manufactured between 2010 and 2020 can benefit from an SSD and/or RAM upgrade. Very recent ultrathin laptops (2021+) may have soldered RAM and storage that cannot be upgraded — we'll check your specific model before recommending anything. WhatsApp us your laptop brand and model number and we'll tell you instantly what upgrades are possible.
