Every Battery Wears Out, and Yours Is Telling You So

A lithium battery is a consumable. It has a working life measured in charge cycles, not years, and once it has been through roughly 500 to 800 full cycles it starts holding noticeably less charge. On a laptop that gets plugged and unplugged every day, that is somewhere around the two to three year mark. Heat shortens it further, and in Johannesburg a laptop that lives on a bed or a couch, with its vents blocked, ages its battery faster than one on a desk.

Most people bring the device in when the runtime has dropped to twenty minutes, or when it dies at 40 percent without warning, or when it will not run at all unless the charger is in. Those are all the same underlying story: the cells can no longer deliver the current the machine asks for. No software fix, no calibration trick and no setting change reverses that. The pack has to come out.

We test before we quote. Battery symptoms overlap almost exactly with charging port faults and with power problems on the mainboard, and we would rather find that out on the bench than have you pay for a battery that was never the problem. The assessment is R345 and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Signs the Battery Is the Culprit

• Runtime has collapsed, hours of use became half an hour
• The device shuts down suddenly at 30 or 40 percent as if it were flat
• Windows or macOS reports the battery as needing service or as not detected
• The machine only runs with the charger connected and dies the instant you unplug
• Charging stalls in the 80s and never reaches full
• The case is bulging, the trackpad sits proud, or a phone screen is being pushed up at one edge
• The device runs hot around the battery area even when idle
• The phone throttles and feels sluggish, which iPhones do deliberately when a battery degrades

A Swollen Battery Is Urgent, Not Cosmetic

If the bottom cover of your laptop no longer sits flat, if the trackpad has lifted or clicks oddly, or if the screen on your phone is being lifted away from the frame, the battery inside is swelling. That is gas building up in cells that have broken down internally. It is the one battery fault we treat as urgent.

Stop charging the device, power it down, and stop using it. Do not press the bulge back down, do not pierce it, and do not try to prise the pack out with a screwdriver. A punctured lithium cell can catch fire, and it does so fast. Keep the device off soft furniture and out of a closed bag until you can get it to us.

Swelling also does collateral damage while it grows. On laptops it bends the bottom case and, in bad cases, pushes against the trackpad or the mainboard. On MacBooks and phones it lifts the screen assembly, which is how a battery job turns into a screen replacement as well. The earlier you bring it in, the more likely the only thing you are paying for is a battery.

Generic or Original: What the Difference Actually Buys You

For most laptops there are two real options. A generic replacement pack is a good quality aftermarket cell assembly with the correct voltage, capacity and protection circuitry for your model. It starts at R1,380 plus R200 fitting. It is what we fit most often and it carries the same 6-month warranty as any other part we supply.

An original battery is the manufacturer's own part, and it runs R2,380 to R2,800 plus R200 fitting. It is worth the difference in two situations: when the machine is newer and still under some form of manufacturer support, and when the model is fussy about battery firmware, which some Dell, HP and Lenovo business ranges are. In those cases a generic pack can charge fine but report odd health figures or refuse fast charging. We will tell you upfront if your model is one of them.

MacBooks are their own category. The pack is glued into the top case rather than clipped in, so removal means adhesive solvent, patience and often removing the trackpad and speakers to get to it. How the Job Runs

What We Cannot Promise a Price On

Two things sit outside a fixed quote. The first is board-level charging failure. If the battery is healthy but the machine will not charge it, the fault is in the power circuitry on the mainboard, and that has to be diagnosed under a microscope before anyone can honestly name a figure. Board work runs 2 to 3 days and we quote after diagnosis, never before.

The second is a battery that has already caused physical damage. A pack that swelled far enough to bend a chassis, lift a screen or push into a trackpad means additional parts, and the cost depends entirely on what it broke. We show you what we find and quote the pieces separately so you can decide what is worth fixing.

Asetos is an independent repair shop, not a manufacturer's authorised service centre. That is why we can fit generic parts and quote both tiers. If your device is still under manufacturer warranty, tell us, because opening it here may affect that cover and we would rather point you to the right place than cost you a warranty. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a battery replacement take?

Most laptop and phone batteries are done the same day, often within two to three hours if the part is in stock. MacBook batteries take longer because the pack is glued into the case and has to be released carefully, so allow the full day and sometimes a second day. If the battery is fine and the fault turns out to be in the charging circuit on the board, that work runs 2 to 3 days.

Do I pay the R345 assessment on top of the battery price?

No, not if you go ahead with the repair. The R345 assessment is waived when you proceed. You only pay it if we test the machine, tell you what is wrong, and you decide not to have the work done.

Is a generic battery safe to use?

The ones we fit are, yes. We buy from suppliers we have used for years, and every cell we install has the correct protection circuit and the correct voltage and capacity rating for the model. Cheap unbranded packs off a marketplace listing are a different story, and they are the ones we see swelling and failing within months. If you want the manufacturer's own part, we quote the original tier instead.

My laptop only works with the charger plugged in. Is that the battery?

Usually, yes. A battery that has lost all usable capacity will let the machine run on mains power but drop dead the moment you unplug it. It can also be a failed charging port or a power fault on the board, which is why we test before quoting. The assessment tells us which of the three it is.

My battery is swollen and the case is bulging. What should I do?

Stop using the device, unplug it, and do not charge it again. Do not press on the bulge and do not try to lever the pack out yourself. A swollen lithium pack is a fire risk and pressure or a puncture makes it worse. What happens to my old battery?

We take it in and dispose of it through our e-waste stream at no charge. Lithium packs do not belong in a household bin.
