When a Keyboard Stops Being Reliable

A keyboard rarely fails all at once. It usually starts with one key that needs a harder press, then a second key that repeats itself, then a row that only works when the laptop sits at a particular angle. People work around it for weeks with an external USB keyboard before they bring the machine in. That workaround is fine at a desk and useless on the road, which is normally what finally brings someone to the shop.

The first thing we establish is whether the fault is the keyboard itself or something behind it. A keyboard is a membrane or a set of switches connected to the mainboard by a thin ribbon cable. Any of those three can be the problem. A partly seated ribbon cable, a corroded connector, or a failed keyboard controller on the board all produce symptoms that look exactly like a worn out keyboard, and replacing the keyboard in those cases changes nothing. We test the keyboard against a known good unit, check the connector under magnification, and only then quote.

We are an independent repair shop, not a manufacturer's authorised service centre. In practice that means we will replace a single failed component rather than an entire assembly where the manufacturer's procedure calls for the assembly, and we will tell you honestly when the assembly really is the only route. On most Windows laptops the keyboard is a separate part. On modern MacBooks it is not, and that is the single biggest reason the two prices are so far apart.

Faults We See Most Often

• Individual dead keys, most commonly the space bar, backspace, E, A and the arrow cluster, from simple wear
• Keys that repeat or double up, usually a dirty or degraded membrane contact rather than a software fault
• A full row or block that stopped working together, which normally points to one damaged trace or a ribbon cable problem
• Liquid spills, where the immediate symptom is a dead keyboard and the real risk is corrosion spreading to the mainboard
• Missing or broken keycaps and scissor clips, often after a cleaning attempt or a key being levered off
• Backlight failure with the keys still typing correctly, which is a separate circuit and needs its own diagnosis
• MacBook butterfly keyboards with a sticking or unresponsive key from a single crumb of debris
• Keys that work intermittently only when the laptop is picked up or flexed, which is a loose connector until proven otherwise

Why a MacBook Keyboard Costs so Much More

On a typical Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer or Asus laptop, the keyboard is a self contained part. It clips or screws into the top of the chassis, plugs in with one ribbon cable, and comes out on its own. Fitting a new one is straightforward workshop work and the price reflects that.

Apple builds the keyboard into the top case. The keyboard, the trackpad surround, the speakers and, on most models, the battery are riveted into one aluminium assembly. There is no separate keyboard to order. Replacing a MacBook keyboard means replacing that entire top case and transferring everything across, which is a full strip down of the machine. The part costs more, the labour is longer, and that is why MacBook keyboard work runs from R2,300 to R4,600 for the part plus R920 to install, against R1,150 to R1,950 installed for a Windows laptop.

Before we quote a top case on a MacBook we always try the cheaper route first. A single sticking key on a butterfly keyboard is often debris under the mechanism, and a careful clean fixes it. Spills and Liquid Damage

A spill is not a keyboard job until we have looked underneath it. Liquid runs through the keyboard, through the vents in the chassis, and onto the mainboard, where it keeps corroding long after the laptop looks dry. Sugary drinks and wine are worse than water because the residue stays conductive.

If you have spilled something, switch the laptop off immediately, do not press the power button to test it, unplug the charger, and bring it in. Do not leave it in rice and do not use a hairdryer. The sooner we open it and clean the board, the smaller the repair. We strip the machine, clean the affected areas properly, and assess the board before we talk about a new keyboard, because a fresh keyboard fitted to a corroding board fails again.

Board level work is diagnosed first and quoted after, never priced upfront. If liquid has reached the storage and your files matter more than the machine, start with data recovery.

A failing keyboard often arrives alongside other wear on a machine that has done a few years of work. Can you replace just one key instead of the whole keyboard?

Sometimes. If the keycap or the scissor clip under it has broken but the membrane below is intact, we can often fit a replacement cap and clip and leave the rest of the keyboard alone. That is quick, cheap work and the price follows the assessment.

If the contact under the key has failed, or the same fault is starting to appear on neighbouring keys, a single key repair is a short term patch. In that case we will tell you plainly that the full keyboard is the sensible fix.

How long does it take?

Most Windows laptop keyboards are replaced the same day when the part is in stock. If we have to order a model specific keyboard, allow one to three working days for it to arrive.

MacBook top case replacements take 2 to 3 days, as does any repair that involves board level cleaning after a spill. We confirm the timeline with your quote rather than after the fact.

My laptop got a spill and now the keyboard is dead. Is a new keyboard enough?

Not on its own. Liquid does not stop at the keyboard, it runs through to the mainboard and keeps corroding after the machine looks dry. If we fit a new keyboard onto a board that is still corroding, the repair fails again.

We strip the machine, clean the board properly and assess the damage before quoting. Board level work is always diagnosed first and never priced upfront. Switch the laptop off, unplug it, and bring it in as soon as you can.

Will I lose my data during a keyboard replacement?

On a normal keyboard replacement, no. We do not touch the storage drive and your files stay exactly as they are. We still recommend backing up before any repair, because a machine that is already faulty can surprise everyone.

On a MacBook top case replacement the machine is fully stripped, and on liquid damage the drive itself may already be affected. In both cases we will tell you the risk before we start, and data recovery is available if it is needed.

What warranty do I get on a replacement keyboard?

6 months on the replacement keyboard and any other parts we fit, and 3 months on the repair work itself. If a key stops responding within that period, bring the laptop back to Shop G15 and we will sort it out.

The warranty covers the part and our workmanship. It does not cover a fresh spill or physical damage after the repair, which would be a new job.
