From R690When Your Device Will Not Charge
A device that will not charge is one of the most common things we see, and it is also one of the most commonly misdiagnosed. Customers arrive certain the port is broken, and roughly a third of the time it is the charger. Another portion of the time it is a battery that has stopped accepting a charge. The symptom looks identical from the outside, which is why we test before we quote.
Asetos has been repairing charging ports in Rosebank since 2008. We do the full range, from a plug-in DC jack on an older laptop to a USB-C port soldered flat onto a MacBook logic board. Where the port is a separate part, replacement is quick. Where it is soldered to the mainboard, it is microsoldering work under a microscope, and we do that in the workshop rather than sending it away.
Assessment is R345, and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair. That fee buys a real diagnosis: charger output measured, port inspected under magnification, battery health read, charging circuit checked. You get told which of the three is at fault and what each option costs.
The Symptom Splits Three Ways
The charger. Power bricks fail more often than people expect, especially the thin cable near the plug where it has been wound tightly. A charger that works intermittently, gets unusually hot, or shows no light is the cheapest fault on this list. We test output voltage on the bench in a few minutes. The battery. If the machine runs fine on mains power but the charge percentage never moves, or Windows and macOS report the battery as needing service, the port is doing its job and the cell is not. Generic replacement batteries start at R1,380 plus R200 install. Original batteries run R2,380 to R2,800 plus R200 install. MacBook batteries are R1,610 to R3,450 plus R920 install.
The port. Ports fail from physical stress, not age. Charging with the cable at an angle, tripping over the lead, transporting the laptop with the charger still plugged in, or years of plugging and unplugging a phone in the dark. The plug wobbles, the solder joints crack, and eventually the connection is lost. This is the repair band of R690 to R1,380.

Assessment, R345
We measure charger output, inspect the port under magnification and read the battery health. You get a clear answer on which part has failed and a price before any work starts.
You approve the quote
Nothing is repaired until you say yes. If you go ahead, the R345 assessment falls away. If you decide not to, you pay the R345 and take the device back as it came.
The repair
Plug-in ports and daughterboards are replaced the same day where stock allows. Soldered ports go under the microscope, and that work takes 2 to 3 days.
Testing
We charge the device from flat, check it holds under load, and confirm the plug sits firmly with no play before it goes back to you.

Replacement parts carry a 6-month warranty, repair work carries 3 months. Keep your job card.

Two Things Worth Knowing Before You Bring It In
First, stop using a port that only charges at an angle. Every wiggle works the cracked joint a little further. There is a real difference in cost and time between replacing a port and rebuilding pads that have been torn off a board.
Second, we do not quote board-level power faults before we have opened the device. If the port itself is fine and the charging circuit on the mainboard has failed, the work depends entirely on which component died and whether the board is repairable at all. We tell you what we find and what it costs, and you decide from there.

Frequently Asked Questions
My laptop says plugged in, not charging. Is that the port?
Not always. That message usually means the machine is receiving power but the battery is refusing the charge, which points at the battery or the charging circuit rather than the socket. A dead port normally shows the opposite: no charging light at all, and the machine dies when you unplug it. We test the charger output, the port and the battery health separately so you are not paying to replace the wrong part.
How much does a charging port repair cost?
Charging port repair runs R690 to R1,380 depending on the device and how the port is fitted. Ports on a daughterboard or a plug-in cable sit at the lower end. Ports soldered directly to the mainboard sit at the upper end because they take microsoldering time. Assessment is R345 and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair.
If the fault turns out to be damage to the power circuitry on the board rather than the port itself, we quote after assessment. We do not put a fixed price on board-level work before we have looked at it.
How long does it take?
Most charging port repairs are done the same day if the part is in stock. Board-level work, where the port is soldered to the mainboard or the charging circuit needs tracing, takes 2 to 3 days. If we need to order a specific port for an uncommon model, we tell you the wait when we quote, not afterwards.
The cable only charges if I hold it at an angle. Should I wait?
No. A port that only works at an angle has loose or cracked solder joints, and every time the plug moves it flexes those joints further. Left long enough, the joint tears the pad off the board, and what was a straightforward port replacement becomes board repair. Bring it in while it still charges.
Will I lose my data?
No. A charging port repair is hardware work and does not touch your drive. We still recommend a backup before any repair as a matter of habit. If a device is already dead and you need the files off it urgently, see data recovery.
Do you fix iPhone and Android charging ports?
Yes. On most phones the charging port is part of a flex assembly that also carries the microphone and the antenna, so the whole assembly is replaced rather than the socket alone. Are you an authorised Apple or Dell service centre?
No. Asetos is an independent repair shop and we say so plainly. That means we can do board-level charging port work that an authorised centre would handle by swapping the whole board, and usually at a lower cost. It also means work carried out here may affect a manufacturer warranty that is still running, so if your device is under warranty, check that first.
