From R920Why a Failing Hinge Should Not Wait
A laptop hinge is a small metal mechanism carrying the full weight of the lid through a few thousand open and close cycles a year. Inside it are friction washers and a grease pack that dry out with age. As they dry, the hinge stiffens, and the force you use to open the lid stops being absorbed by the mechanism and starts being transferred straight into whatever the hinge is bolted to. On most laptops that is a set of small plastic posts moulded into the lid.
Those posts crack. Once they crack, the hinge starts lifting the bezel away from the lid every time you open the machine, the corner of the lid separates, and the screen panel behind it begins taking pressure it was never designed to take. The display cable, which runs through a channel right beside the hinge, gets pinched or stretched. That is when the calls start: flickering, a white line down the screen, a display that blanks when you move the lid.
The escalation is the important part. A hinge repair is R920 to R1,955. A cracked panel turns that into screen replacement at R1,955 to R2,105 plus R150 to R200 for installation, on top of the hinge work you still have to do. On a MacBook the same neglect can mean a display assembly at R4,999 to R18,000 plus R920 install. If your lid has started to creak, gap or fight you, bring it in while it is still only a hinge.

What Happens When You Bring It In
Book in and assessment
We open and close the lid, feel where the resistance is and check for movement at the bezel. Assessment is R345 and falls away if you go ahead with the repair. Where the fault is obvious, we quote on the spot.
Strip and inspection
The bezel and lid are opened up so we can see the actual hinge, the bracket in the base and the condition of the plastic posts. This is where we find out whether it is a hinge job or a hinge plus lid job, and we phone you before the price changes.
Repair or replacement
A dry hinge is stripped, cleaned and re-greased. A bent or worn hinge is replaced with the correct part for your model. Where the screw posts have torn out, we rebuild them with metal inserts and structural adhesive so the new fixing has something solid to bite into.
Cable check and reroute
The display cable is inspected along the hinge channel, tested for intermittent faults, and reseated so it is not being crushed on every close. A cable that has already been cut through is quoted separately.
Reassembly and torque test
Everything goes back together and we run the lid through its full range of movement, checking that it holds at any angle, sits flush when closed and shows no flicker on the panel.

Laptop Hinges and MacBook Hinges Are Different Jobs
On a Windows laptop the hinge is usually a separate serviceable part. It unbolts from the lid and from the base, and a replacement hinge set for a Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer or Asus model is generally available or can be ordered in. That is why the R920 to R1,955 range covers most of what walks through the door. The harder half of the job is normally not the hinge itself but the plastic it was bolted to.
MacBooks are built the other way around. The hinge on a unibody or Retina model is part of the clutch and display structure, and Apple does not sell it as a standalone component. Sometimes we can service the clutch and restore proper tension, which keeps the job in the hinge repair range. Sometimes the only correct fix is a display assembly, which is a very different number. Where a Hinge Repair Stops Making Sense
Not every hinge is worth saving, and we would rather tell you that up front than take your money. On some very thin models the hinges are riveted into the lid rather than screwed, so the mounting point cannot be rebuilt and the whole lid housing has to be replaced. On older or discontinued models the hinge set may simply no longer exist in the supply chain. In both cases the price follows assessment and parts availability, and we will tell you what the machine is realistically worth fixing.
If the lid is already cracked across the panel, the sensible order is usually one visit that covers both the hinge and the screen, because the display comes apart either way and you only pay the strip-down once. How much does laptop hinge repair cost?
Hinge repair runs from R920 to R1,955. The lower end covers a single hinge that has gone stiff or loose but is still bolted to sound plastic. The upper end covers both hinges, or a repair where the screw posts inside the lid have torn out and the mounting points have to be rebuilt before anything can be bolted back down.
If the lid casing itself is broken beyond a rebuild, or the display cable has been torn, the price follows assessment because it depends on the part and its availability for your model. Assessment is R345 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair.
How long does a hinge repair take?
Most hinge repairs are done the same day. If the plastic mounting points have to be rebuilt, the adhesive needs to cure properly before the lid goes back under load, so we usually keep the machine overnight and hand it back the next day. Work that needs a part ordered in, or board-level attention to a damaged display connector, takes 2 to 3 days.

My screen still works. Can you fix just the hinge?
Yes, and that is exactly when you should bring it in. If the panel is intact and the display cable has not been pinched, the job stays a hinge job. Once the lid corner cracks open and the panel takes the strain, you are looking at screen replacement at R1,955 to R2,105 plus R150 to R200 for installation on top of the hinge work.

Is it worth repairing the hinge on an older laptop?
Often yes, because a hinge repair is one of the cheaper structural jobs and it protects a screen worth more than the repair. Where it stops making sense is when the lid housing has broken up completely on a machine that is already slow and short on storage. In that case we say so, and we will tell you what an SSD and memory upgrade would do for it instead, so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.
